Apparently, Africans had no sophisticated societies, spoke languages with barely 2,000 words and were living in primitive conditions until Europeans arrived. But how accurate is that historical narrative? Africa is home to thousands of languages, most of which do not use click consonants. And even among languages that do incorporate clicks, these are complex linguistic systems with extensive vocabularies, not some primitive form of communication. African languages had rich vocabularies and sophisticated grammatical structures long before European colonial expansion. From the ancient Kingdom of Dʿmt and the monumental architectural discoveries at Yeha to African urban centres. Other regions and cultures had water-management systems, sanitation and sophisticated political institutions, precolonial African history is considerably more complex than these stereotypes suggest. And when discussing reparations, we also need to examine what happened after the abolition of slavery in America. The failure to provide formerly enslaved African Americans with meaningful economic opportunities, the reversal of land redistribution, sharecropping, Jim Crow segregation and subsequent discriminatory policies all contributed to inequalities with intergenerational consequences. You cannot have an honest conversation about who benefited from history without examining who was exploited, who was excluded and who lost out. Historical accounting needs to work in both directions. #Africanhistory #reparations #BlackHistory #blacktoktok #truthmatters
