Over the weekend, US President Joe Biden spoke on the phone with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zekensky, a separate call with President Emmanuel Macron of France, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom, and a third call with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Focus of the conversations was the recent events in Russia and Putin’s possible new weaknesses given the power struggle inside the country. “The leaders discussed the situation in Russia. They also affirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine,” read the White House statement after the call with Macron, Sunak, and Scholz. On the call with Zelensky, the White House said they “discuss support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression. They discussed Ukraine’s ongoing counter-offensive, and President Biden reaffirmed unwavering U.S. support, including through continued security, economic, and humanitarian aid. The leaders also discussed recent events in Russia.” The call with Trudeau was “part of his [Biden’s] close coordination with Allies and partners following recent events in Russia. The leaders affirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine and discussed the situation in Russia.” #zelensky #digitaldiplomacy

What’s happening in Russia? “Watch for defections of Russian diplomats in the coming hours,” says Brett Bruen, president of the Global Situation Room and a former US diplomat. Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul commented: “Putin could not control a mercenary force that he created & run by his buddy. He had to rely on Lukashenko of all people to cut a deal with a guy he called just hours ago a traitor. These are signs of real weakness, not strength.” Ukraine President Zelensky: “Today, the world saw that the bosses of Russia do not control anything. Nothing at all. Complete chaos. Complete absence of any predictability.” #putin #digitaldiplomacy
