The term "submarine" was coined looooong before modern submarines. If it's a ship that can submerge and than resurface, even if it's only for an hour, it's a submarine.

If a boat can completely go underwater for longer than you can hold your breath and come back up again no problem, it’s a submarine.

Uboats could do more than 2 knots submerged. The Type VII could do nearly 8 knots submerged.

my Grandpas frigate sank/disabled 3 Uboats. as much as it was necessary, he hated it. he never really talked about it, read it in his journals.

24 hours with an effective crush depth of 200+ meters is a submarine. Also, U-boat literally means “undersea boat”, so I suppose they never really called it a submarine.
