in Kuwait, we don't open gifts infront of a group. mainly because it'll cause discomfort or embarrasment to whoever did not bring anything or got a simple gift.

for me, it's just to respect the gift giver, because not all gift giver can give something expensive, I don't want the giver to be judge by other guests, you know, some people like to judge others
