Secret Service agents are selected through a rigorous hiring process that includes: 🔻 A background investigation. 🔻 Drug screening. 🔻 Polygraph exam. 🔻 Psychological evaluation. 🔻 Extensive interviews. Candidates must meet basic qualifications, including: 🔹 U.S. citizenship. 🔹 Being between 21 & 37 years old (exceptions for veterans). 🔹 Passing a written exam, physical fitness test & medical evaluation. 🔹 Having a relevant educational background (such as criminal justice) or law enforcement/military experience can help. Secret Service agents undergo extensive training, which can last for several months, split into different phases: ▪️Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP): This takes place at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia. It lasts about 12 weeks & covers general federal law enforcement skills such as investigative techniques, firearms handling, defensive tactics &criminal law. ▪️Secret Service-Specific Training: After FLETC, agents go through Secret Service-specific training at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Maryland. This lasts about 18 weeks & includes: 🔹 Protection tactics. 🔹 Advanced firearms & defensive driving skills. 🔹 Counter-assault training. 🔹 Crowd control. 🔹 Emergency medical training. 🔹 Scenario-based exercises simulating real-world protective operations. Balancing protection & normal life can be challenging. Secret Service agents strive to provide protection without being overly intrusive. Here’s how: ▪️Discreet but Visible: Agents are highly trained to remain in the background as much as possible. While they're ever-present, especially for high-ranking officials, they often adopt a low-profile approach. ▪️Advance Work: Before any outing or event, Secret Service agents conduct advance work, securing locations & mapping out emergency exits & procedures. This minimizes disruptions when protectees arrive. ▪️Private Residence: When individuals are out of office & return to civilian life, such as former Presidents, the Secret Service maintains a protective presence at their private residences.
