White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre rejected speculation Monday that President Biden is being treated for Parkinson's disease following reports that an expert on the disease had frequently visited the White House.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre rejected speculation Monday that President Biden is being treated for Parkinson's disease following reports that an expert on the disease had frequently visited the White House. "Has the president been treated for Parkinson's? No. Is he being treated for Parkinson's? No, he's not. Is he taking medication for Parkinson’s? No," she told reporters in a heated exchange. The New York Times reported that the expert, Dr. Kevin Cannard from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, went to the White House eight times in eight months from last summer to this spring, according to official visitor logs. It's not clear if Dr. Cannard was there to consult specifically about the president or for unrelated meetings, and Ms. Jean-Pierre refused to provide any clarity, citing privacy and security concerns. Ms. Jean-Pierre said President Biden has seen a neurologist three times since taking office as part of his annual physical exam, the most recent of which happened in February. She cited the February medical report, which said the president showed no signs of Parkinson's. "An extremely detailed neurologic exam was again reassuring in that there were no findings which would be consistent with any cerebellar or other central neurological disorder, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's or ascending lateral sclerosis, nor are there any signs of cervical myelopathy," the report states. Reporters in the briefing room, particularly Ed O'Keefe of CBS News, grew frustrated with Ms. Jean-Pierre for refusing to directly answer questions about the nature of Dr. Cannard's visits, pointing out that the logs were public. "You're not answering a very basic, direct question," Mr. O'Keefe said. "We're miffed around here about how information has been shared with the press corps." "It doesn't matter how hard you push me. It doesn't matter how angry you get with me. I'm not going to confirm a name," Ms. Jean-Pierre said. "It doesn't matter if it's even in the log. I am not going to do that from here." The Obama administration began the practice of publicly releasing visitor logs. The Trump administration rescinded that policy, and President Biden reinstated it after taking office. #karinejeanpierre #parkinsons #cspan
