These tornadoes consist of the parent tornadic circulation with smaller, rapidly spinning subvortices orbiting within it. Each subvortex acts like a mini-tornado, intensifying winds locally and creating unpredictable bursts of destruction. Why do they form? Multivortex tornadoes happen when the air inside the main funnel breaks into smaller, faster-spinning areas of rotation due to extreme instability and wind dynamics. These subvortices often appear and disappear in seconds, making them difficult to track. Why are they so unpredictable? • Subvortices can rotate at different speeds and directions, leading to erratic paths of damage. • While the main funnel looks steady, these mini-tornadoes create localized surges of power that can intensify destruction in one spot while sparing another nearby. • They’re chaotic to chase—making even experienced storm chasers feel uneasy. Getting close to tornadoes like this can turn deadly really quickly.
