Simple concept. If the customer cancelled or changed flights. That seat becomes available to anyone who purchases a seat or given to someone on stand by.

No there is no "use that seat" if you don't scan and YOU are not on board the seat will be given to someone else. It's just how it works

If they paid to change their son’s flight to an earlier one then they don’t get that seat too. Not sure if that was the case. If not they should get a refund.
