Korea already does the refund at the airport: you just bring your receipts, scan them with your passport, then pick up the actual money AFTER security at a manned booth. It doesn’t take long in total

The question is do you need to present the goods purchased for tax free. If i pack my luggage i would hate to open up and show the goods at the airport before check in.

man i hope they don’t make us bring the boxes to the airport. sometimes you have to discard the boxes to fit everything in your luggage

Knowing Japan, they would probably ask you to show everything with boxes and tags intact. Whereas other countries you will just need to show the receipt of proof.

I think that’s insane, there’s no way I would’ve been able to keep all the receipts or be able to show the items if they’re all packed in my checked luggage, I already get to the airport 4hrs early

Japan has the best tax free policies, get it on the spot, no fees. Problematic foreigners ruining it for all of us. Story of Chinese visitor buying big items and reselling it in Japan 😢

it'll be a nightmare as there will be so many receipts to sort through, and tax free is like 5 or 10 % and then theirs the refunding? if you've paid in different methods cash, card etc

I never get the tax refund because I see myself as a visitor using the public infrastructure and benefitting from the safety and security. The Diet should just get rid of tax exemption altogether.
