🚨Handling the “paranoid overthinker”👇 🧠 As a manager it can feel really frustrating and at times tiring when you give your direct report what seems to you like straightforward constructive feedback and they seem to “blow it out of proportion”. 💡Everyone has different tolerances for feedback. Being able to receive feedback is a skill. As is being able to give feedback in a way that the person can receive without undue anxiety. ▶️ In a situation like this where you notice when you give feedback it causes your direct report a lot of anxiety and concern, try to avoid getting frustrated and defensive and instead view it as data that the way this person needs to receive feedback may be different to how you’re currently giving it. I would recommend the following: 1️⃣ Thank them for coming to talk to you about their concerns. This creates safety which is essential for building trust. 2️⃣ Reassure them. Even if you praise them regularly reassure them you have no doubts about their competence. Some people need to hear this more than once. 3️⃣ Ask them for feedback. Explore how you could adjust how you share feedback in a way that feels supportive. Let them know you have already been reflecting on this and have some thoughts. “I’ve been reflecting on how I can share my thoughts and feedback in a way that’s more helpful for you. I’d really value your input too” 4️⃣ Sometimes people find it difficult giving their manager feedback so if you share some of your own reflections and ask for their advice it can help them open up. 💬 Have you ever been on either side of this? Share your experiences in the comments and any tips 👀 📌 Please be mindful that the perspective offered in this video is generalised and won’t fit every situation so please follow your instincts about whether this applies to your situation.
