A wildlife researcher in the Peruvian Amazon has discovered a tarantula infected by the "zombie fungus" Cordyceps, a rare & eerie find. "It took over his nervous system & forced him to come to this location," Chris Ketola, a field researcher, said. "Then as he died, the fungus sprouted out of his body, allowing the spores to spread." If Cordyceps sounds familiar, it’s probably because it inspired the popular video game-turned-hit-zombie-TV-series "The Last of Us." So what is Cordyceps? Cordyceps is a genus of parasitic fungi that primarily affects insects and other arthropods. The most famous species is Ophiocordyceps sinensis (also called Cordyceps sinensis), which is known for its medicinal properties & Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, which is notorious for turning insects like ants into "zombies." Origins & Behavior: Cordyceps is found mainly in tropical rainforests & humid environments, although some species like Ophiocordyceps sinensis grow in high-altitude regions like Tibet & Nepal. Cordyceps spores infect insects or other small arthropods, often entering through the respiratory system. The fungus then spreads through the body of the host, ultimately killing it. The fungus grows out of the host's body, releasing more spores to infect other animals. How Animals Get It: Animals, particularly insects, become infected when they come into contact with Cordyceps spores. Once an insect inhales or ingests the spores, the fungus takes over their bodies & central nervous systems, often compelling the host to behave in ways that spread the spores further. For example, infected ants are famously made to climb plants before the fungus erupts from their bodies & releases more spores. Threat to Humans: As of now, Cordyceps does not pose a “significant” direct threat to humans. While certain species of Cordyceps are used in traditional medicine for their potential health benefits, human infection by Cordyceps fungi is extremely rare. Our immune systems & body temperatures are “typically” too hostile for the fungi to take over in the same way they do with insects. Is the Threat Rising? The possibility of Cordyceps fungi evolving to affect humans has been explored in fiction like the TV show “The Last of Us” but in reality, there's little evidence suggesting that it could become a major threat to humans. However, climate change & habitat destruction could theoretically alter the behavior & range of fungi species, potentially creating conditions where fungi like Cordyceps might evolve in unpredictable ways. For now, though, it is not considered an “imminent” danger to human health. Research continues into fungal infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, but the specific risk from Cordyceps remains very low. #cordyceps #cordycepsfungus #cordycepsfungi #fungus #fungi #zombiefungus #science #thelastofus #news #breakingnew #trending #viral #fyp
