Doug is a young Douglas squirrel almost a year old. He is remarkably calm with all the other squirrels around. He started out in the chair next to me all by himself with a little pile of sunflower seeds in a bowl. When that ran out he came over to me to me. That’s when I realized that it was almost surely little Doug. He remembers me from his childhood when he was here virtually every day. He then disappeared for many months until just recently. So he is comfortable with me and the area in general but not with any of the other squirrels around although he stood up to the resident alpha brown squirrel when he (Scruffy) tried to run him off. They were a rotating ball of fur for a couple moments there but Scruffy usually gets away with more or less easily chasing the other squirrel away. When they really put up resistance he can just back down and go back to his business. I was impressed that this little guy wasn’t intimidated and came right back to me and finished eating. He doesn’t exhibit alpha behavior himself and is content to stay close to me and tolerates grey squirrels unless they are approaching his immediate vicinity which is often just because they didn’t see him yet. Most grey squirrels give the little brown Douglas squirrels a wide berth once they see them. In this video Gus is on my lap part of the time and ignored Doug and didn’t mind Scruffy getting something out of my pocket either but will actually assertively keep other grey squirrels at a distance while he is up there.
