worked with a 70 plus year old Mason. we used common brick above box and around flue liners . especially interior, he said block can't handle heat.

One thing that should be mentioned also is the height of the chimney above the roof has a lot to do with pulling the air upward from the firebox

When I worked for a custom fire place builder. We never put mortar on the interior white firebrick.
