When you make the decision to become a reptile parent, you will be inundated with so much information your brain will want to explode. There's SO MUCH to learn and you'll learn more all the time.. you just have to keep an open mind, learn, try to remember it all, make lots of notes and cheat sheets, take screenshots.. you name it. One thing that many reptile owners will hear about is MBD. Metabolic Bone Disease. This is caused by calcium deficiency. Snakes eat whole animals so, they're fine. Crested geckos, gargoyle geckos and some other geckos eat premade food so it's easy peasy to make sure they get the correct nutrients. However, for many, you need to make sure your pets get calcium supplements with added D3 to keep with absorption. They also need correct phosphorus levels in their diet. UVB is also important to many reptiles (not so much nocturnal ones). Without these key dietary needs met, bones become weak, soft or brittle. They can break, shatter, crumble. They can develop weak muscles, muscles tremors, in severe cases it can cause death. In mild cases it can be reversible with veterinary help. In extremely severe cases, where it's very painful, euthanasia is your best choice so your pet doesn't die a slow death. Meet Lenard. He's a MBD survivor. He was rescued along with many other leopard geckos by a friend who ran a rescue for several years. She was unable to carry on so a while back, I took in some of her assistant l special needs leopard geckos to help her out. Lenard if one of the ones we brought home. This is what MBD looks like. He's not in pain, but he's too far beyond fixing. So, he gets to live with a jelly like limb, a bumpy spine. He eats well most days and loves being held and getting attention. I'm so thankful Lenard was saved and had a chance at life. Metabolic Bone Disease is 100% preventable Please.. make sure you take the time to educate yourself before getting any pet. We're not expected to be perfect all the time but we are expected to do our best and, that begins with education. #reptiles #reptilelover #geckos #petcare #pets #leopardgecko #mbd #metabolicbonedisorder #herpetology #herping #lizards #exoticpets #petnutrition #education #reptilesoftiktok #lizardsoftiktok #geckosoftiktok
