Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin condemned Sunday’s drone attack on a U.S. military base in Jordan that killed three service members and wounded at least 34 others. “Let me start with my outrage and sorrow for the deaths of the three brave U.S. troops in Jordan and for the other troops who were wounded,” the secretary said Monday at the beginning of a meeting at the Pentagon with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. “The president and I will not tolerate attacks on American forces, and we will take all necessary actions to defend the United States and our troops.” Iran-backed militias have repeatedly attacked U.S. personnel and commercial shipping in the region throughout the war in Gaza, but this weekend’s strike marked the first time U.S. service members had been killed in such an attack. The attack happened at Tower 22, a base in northeast Jordan, close to the border with Syria, that houses some 350 U.S. Army and Air Force personnel. It was Secretary Austin’s first day back at the Pentagon since Dec. 21. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in early December and underwent a surgical procedure to treat the cancer on Dec. 22. After working at home for a week, he was taken by ambulance to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Jan. 1 for an infection and stayed there for two weeks while he recovered. The secretary has faced scrutiny for his lack of transparency, failing to notify both the public and senior officials at the Pentagon and White House about the hospital stay until days later. “At this important time, I’m glad to be back at the Pentagon,” Secretary Austin said. “I feel good and recovering well, but still recovering, and I appreciate all the good wishes that I have received thus far.” #lloydaustin #secdef #pentagon #ustroops #jordan #gazawar #nato #cspan
