Football's Anti-Racism campaign faces its toughest test when it's actually used. Football constantly tells us there is "No Room for Racism." It's on the armbands, the advertising boards, the pre-match ceremonies and every major tournament. FIFA even introduced an official anti-racism gesture so players and coaches know exactly what to do if they believe a racist incident has taken place. Today, Hossam Hassan used that gesture. Whether there was racist abuse or not is something only a proper investigation can determine. The question is much bigger. If football encourages people to use its anti-racism protocol, why did the immediate response appear to be a yellow card for the man using it? Why wasn't the priority to establish why the gesture had been made? This came after a match full of tension, physical challenges, controversial decisions and emotions running high. Egypt clearly felt aggrieved, and the frustration on the touchline had been building long before the final whistle. Argentina deserves credit for an incredible comeback. They earned their place in the quarter-finals. But two things can be true at once. Argentina can deserve to win, and football can still be asked difficult questions about how situations like this are handled. The credibility of every anti-racism campaign depends on moments like these. Campaigns are not judged by powerful slogans or carefully produced videos. They're judged by what happens when someone actually uses the protocol football created. If the message is "speak up," then nobody should feel that speaking up will simply lead to punishment before there is even a conversation. Football owes players, coaches and supporters consistency. That's how trust is built. Because if the game's own anti-racism signal doesn't trigger dialogue first, then what exactly is it there for? 🎥: @nasrjackson & @usatraveladvisor via Instagram #megazettes #egypt #worldcup #مصر #حسام_حسن
