I recreated a shot from Evangelion in CGI! This is my first large-scale VFX project using Houdini. Sachiel’s missile shot has always been a favorite, and I wanted to see how I could capture that violent and punchy feel as the missile shreds. The shot broke down into a few key challenges. The AT shields needed a steady, reactive pulse without being manually animated, so I drove them using CHOPs. The missile itself had to shred in three distinct directions, which I controlled using guided RBD sims. That introduced interference from the interior parts, so I split them into a secondary sim to preserve the outer shell’s shape. Another challenge was that in the anime, Sachiel just stands there with his arm out and no anticipating animation. For most of the energy from the missile to be absorbed and pushed back, his arm muscles needed to expand and contract. To solve this, I layered in muscle deformation using a sculpted variant of Anton Solovodnykov’s model, driven by point deform and blendshapes. A lot of these problems came up again and again, and iterating on them finally brought the shot together. Massive thanks to Helen Kwok for her guidance throughout the project, as well as everyone at Gnomon.
