Tails and ears are traditionally docked and cropped. Ear cropping and tail docking goes back thousands of years. Tails of Dobermans are docked to prevent injuries AND for aesthetics. Dobermans have long, rat-like tails without much fat and fur. There is little protection and they're prone to splitting open especially in modern households where they are typically indoor pets. Ears are cropped primarily to adhere to the breed standard and for aesthetics BUT studies show long eared breeds are prone to moisture build up in the ears. recurring ear infections and lesser hearing, besides floppy ears DO NOT FUNCTION effectively at communicating as erect ears. To deny its aesthetic purpose would be pointless. It's ultimately a look thing. But there are reasons to do both. Optional surgeries like cropping and docking can be useful to dogs and breeds prone to infection and injury. It can also be preventative.

The ear infection part definitely is a lie. Same thing with pitbulls. It also has negative effects on their temperament and can make them anxious and nervous around people and other animals.
