Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said he believes it’s still possible for Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire and hostage-release deal despite the two sides being far apart on terms. “While there are some clear non-starters in Hamas’s response, we do think it creates space for agreement to be reached, and we will work at that relentlessly until we get there,” Secretary Blinken told reporters in Tel Aviv after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Netanyahu rejected a counterproposal from Hamas that would release the roughly 100 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for an end to the war and the release of hundreds of Palestinians, including senior militants, imprisoned in Israel. The prime minister called the plan “delusional,” rejecting any arrangement that leaves Hamas in control of Gaza and vowing to bring his country’s military operations to Rafah, the densely populated region in the southern part of the enclave where more than one million Palestinians have fled since the outbreak of the war. When asked about the prime minister’s rejection of the proposed deal, Secretary Blinken said he is “not going to speak for Israel,” but said Hamas’s counterproposal offered an opportunity “to pursue negotiations.” Secretary Blinken said he made clear to Israeli government officials that the daily civilian death toll in Gaza “remains too high,” but stopped short of telling them not to strike Rafah. “Israel has the responsibility, has the obligation to do everything possible to ensure civilians are protected,” he said, adding that any military operation Israel undertakes “needs to put civilians first and foremost in mind.” #secretaryofstate #antonyblinken #blinken #israel #gazawar #palestine #netanyahu #cspan
