For a tech billionaire, meddling in European politics is not good for business. And Elon Musk is now experiencing it first hand... After inserting himself in the political debate in countries like Germany, the UK, and Italy to push his Make Europe Great Again — or MEGA — President Donald Trump’s top advisor received bad news yesterday as Tesla sales throughout the European continent.  The electric vehicle company, founded and headed by Musk, has registered a plunge in sales in the 3 largest European markets for electric cars in January. In Germany, home to Tesla’s only factory in Europe, only 1,277 new Tesla vehicles were registered (down 59%) — with Germans turning instead to domestic and Chinese automakers for EVs, which recorded a 54% increase in demand in January. Tesla’s sales plummeted 63% in France in January from a year earlier, and 12% in Britain, where Musk riled Prime Minister Keir Starmer through inflammatory rhetoric. Musk made his opening moves across the Atlantic last summer, just as he threw his weight behind Donald Trump’s reelection campaign. The billionaire started to be personally obsessed with Thierry Breton, the then-European Union’s Internal Market commissioner on tech regulation, then with the anti-immigration riots that engulfed the United Kingdom, and then with the immigration debate in Italy. During this time, he forged a friendly alliance with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, but was admonished by the country’s President, Sergio Mattarella, for inserting himself in domestic politics through his platform X. But Musk’s most sustained maneuver has been his full-fledged endorsement for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which is currently polling second in the parliamentary elections scheduled for late February. In the meantime, Musk has also become the self-appointed master of Silicon Valley, which for years has opposed the European Union’s moves to regulate Big Tech. US platforms are now facing a growing list of investigations and sanctions. #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy
