Hey guys, I just wanted to quickly share something with you all… I recently had the privilege of being asked by @bbcradio2 to be a part of a project called 21st Century Folk. Every year they ask a handful of songwriters to write a song based on a theme. This years theme was sport and I was set the task of finding someone within the the big wide world of sport to write about. As some of you will know, I’m a huge arsenal fan so I was immediately drawn to doing something involving them. Some good friends of mine help to run the amazing @Arsenal In The Community - a charitable organisation that help to change peoples lives all over the world as well as in north London. Through them I met Victor. Victor - a huge arsenal fan also - was born in Sierra Leone and at the age of six was taken from his home and was forced into becoming a child soldier. After the war was over, and fighting for many years, he made it to London on his own and as a teenager lived on the streets. Sleeping on a bench in Finsbury Park. He learnt English from lip reading, took every opportunity that was given to him and with the help of some amazing people along the way managed to build a home and a life for himself in London. He now works for a charity - helping other refugees and people in need, as well as helping to take official photos for Arsenal. He is genuinely one of the most inspiring people that I’ve had the honour of meeting. A guy that was given an awful start in life and through sheer positivity and determination has battled through the adversity, ptsd and heartbreak to become a gentle, articulate and lovely man. The video below was shot as I played him his song for the first time. It was an incredibly emotional moment. Big thank you to Freddie, Svenja, Kellie and everyone at BBC Radio 2 and of course to Victor and all of the brilliant people that helped him get to where he is today.
