@bandrhomestead: No chicken coop cleanouts all winter! The deep litter method is my favorite winter time protocol for coop maintenance #foilhatgang #homestead #homesteader #backyardchickens #homesteadinglife #chickensoftiktok #selfsufficient

Add coffee grounds. Great compost, and helps neutralize odor

What about the ammonia? Does that not accumulate?

I do this because, well, it's colder so I clean the coop less in winter. Thanks for validating me with a scientific method 🤓

I do this too, more because I’m 35 weeks pregnant and lazy but also because of whatever you just said right now .

I hated cleaning the mess up at the end of winter last year and said I would never do it again but I do think it’s very effective so I’m doing it again this year, haha

So we get big winters here in SW Ontario. I really love this idea for the winter months, but sand is much cleaner. Since you are completely emptying the coop every 4 months, is it cost effective to just use sand in the summer and hemp in the winter? The last thing I want is to be wasteful.

I do this with my goat house. It’s always such a big project in the spring but the goats stay warm.

lay down a tarp layered in sawdust. when you need to clean it you just roll up the tarp. the poop will rot your floor

We do this too! We also bag our leaves every fall and add a bag or 2 of leaves every week during the winter. By spring we have great compost to add to the garden
