President Biden announced nearly $8 billion in military aid for Ukraine as he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on Thursday. “Russia will not prevail,” President Biden said. “Ukraine will prevail and we’ll continue to stand by you every step of the way.” Most of the new aid, $5.5 billion, will be allocated before Monday’s end of the fiscal year, when funding authority is set to expire. Another $2.4 billion will come from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which allows the U.S. to buy weapons from companies rather than pull from its own stocks. The package includes the first shipment of a precision-guided glide bomb called the Joint Standoff Weapon that has a range of up to 81 miles. The weapon will allow Ukrainians to strike Russian forces from safer distances. It also includes more air defense, unmanned aerial systems and air-to-ground munitions as well as a new Patriot air defense battery and more Patriot missiles. President Biden, however, did not announce that the U.S. would let Ukraine use U.S. missiles to hit targets deep within Russian territory, which has been a key ask of Kyiv. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday issued a threat to the West by saying his country will consider an attack by a nonnuclear power with the “participation or support of a nuclear power” as a “joint attack.” President Zelensky thanked President Biden for his “strong support” throughout the war and said his country deeply appreciated that the U.S. and Ukraine have “stood side-by-side from the very first moments of this terrible Russian invasion.” “Your determination is incredibly important for us to prevail,” he said. “We must restore normal life, and we greatly value your leadership, Mr. President.” #joebiden #volodymyrzelensky #zelensky #ovaloffice #ukrainewar #cspan
