The Homeland Security Department on Wednesday announced migrant encounters have fallen 40% since President Biden issued an executive order three weeks ago to limit asylum claims at the U.S.–Mexico border. “Our team did an exceptional job implementing this new policy, and we’re already seeing the results,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said at a press conference in Tucson, Arizona. The order established a rule to turn away migrants seeking asylum between ports of entry when the seven-day average for illegal crossings hits 2,500 per day The new restrictions, which do not apply to unaccompanied minors, are intended to deter illegal crossings and direct migrants to ports of entry where they can still claim asylum. Secretary Mayorkas said in Tucson there has been a 45% drop in border patrol encounters, a 150% increase in repatriations and an 80% decrease in individuals being place into immigration proceedings. “The president’s actions are working because of their tough response to illegal crossings and because they build on our sustained efforts to exercise our full authorities to enforce the law and impose consequences for illegal entry,” he said. However, the secretary said executive actions were “no substitute” for Congress passing legislation. “Only Congress, through legislation, can fix what everybody agrees is a broken immigration system that was last updated almost 30 years ago,” he said. “Only Congress can give us the resources we need. We have been under-resourced for decades.” He called on lawmakers to provide funding to hire more agents, officers and support personnel; to buy, install and maintain border technology; and to hire more judges to handle the backlog in immigration cases. #asylum #immigration #mayorkas #bordersecurity #cspan
