Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) took a victory lap Tuesday as lawmakers returned to the Capitol on the heels of last week’s election. “It is a beautiful morning in Washington. It is a new day in America,” he said alongside his leadership team from the steps of the Capitol. “This is a very, very important moment for the country and we do not take it lightly.” Republicans are on the verge of securing a government trifecta, recapturing the White House and Senate as they narrow in on a House majority in the 119th Congress. “On Tuesday, voters rejected what they really felt was the misery of the last four years,” the speaker said. “We’re moving on and we’re turning the page, and this is something that the American people desperately need and deserve. We are going to raise an ‘America First’ banner above this place.” Speaker Johnson said Republican lawmakers will work quickly to get President Trump’s agenda through Congress, focusing on lowering costs, securing the border and projecting strength on the world stage. “Republicans in the House and Senate have a mandate,” he said. “It was a decisive win across the nation. The American people want us to implement and deliver that ‘America First’ agenda.” The speaker acknowledged that Republicans were caught flat-footed in 2016 after they had won unified control of the government, but that they were better equipped this time around to hit the ground running. “Precious time was wasted in the beginning of that Congress,” he said. “We are not going to make those mistakes again. We will be ready on day one. We are prepared this time.” #speakerofthehouse #mikejohnson #congress #cspan

Geopolitics Daily 🌍 Here’s the last 24 hours in geopolitics. A planned press conference in Kyiv featuring US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was canceled at the request of the US delegation, following President Trump’s recent remarks calling Zelenskyy a “dictator” and criticizing his leadership.  Russian President Vladimir Putin praised high-level U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia as a “first step” toward restoring relations, though he cautioned that resolving the war in Ukraine would require rebuilding trust.  Russia has also reportedly requested the withdrawal of NATO forces from Eastern Europe during U.S.-Russia talks in Riyadh, a demand the U.S. delegation rejected, according to Romanian officials.  Meanwhile, the U.S. is opposing the use of “Russian aggression” in a G7 statement marking the third anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, causing a rift among member states.  The U.K. and Norway have begun talks on a defense pact to counter Russian threats in the Arctic, with plans to enhance military cooperation and protect undersea infrastructure.  G20 foreign ministers met in South Africa amid growing tensions over the Ukraine war and trade disputes, with the absence of the top U.S. diplomat highlighting strained relations with the hosts.  The DR of Congo has requested military support from Chad to combat the growing insurgency by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in its eastern provinces, according to a Chadian official and a source at the Congolese presidency.  🗓️ February 20, 2025
