All my neighbors have been calving for a few weeks now - but not me. Mostly, it’s because they’re also farmers. So they need to be in the fields in April & May. I’m not. I’ve learned over the years, it’s a heckuva lot easier to work with Mother Nature rather than against her. So now I prefer to calve like the buffalo, on green grass. I’ve been slowly moving my calving start date closer and closer to May. You’ll hear folks talk about how much they’d rather calve on frozen ground vs the mud and wet - and you bet! Where I’m at, most our cold moisture comes in March/April. This video is from February 21st. Plenty of mud & wet. That night temps dropped to -21 degrees. It was a night mare and I was up for 32 hours straight, keeping calves dry and bedding them deep in straw. I don’t have a huge calving barn where I can have a ton of jugs. It makes for a lot less labor this way. Plus, my Feb calves didn’t wean any larger than my April calves.
