When you travel in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, the best way to get around is the “Ride” app - a ride share app that allows you to book competitively priced rides, payable by credit card, money transfer, or cash. However, upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you’ll be met with an ancient group of people, striving to make money in their dead market - taxi drivers. Sometimes it’s more convenient to take a taxi instead of waiting for a ride share driver to arrive, but how do you know if the price is fair? TRAVEL TIP: Ask locals what fair prices are. I asked the eSim tech inside the airpot what a fair price would be for my ride - I now know when I’m being taken advantage of. Expect rides to be more expensive at night, but don’t get taken advantage of. My most recent exchange with taxi drivers: They wanted 1000 Bir ($7.93) for the ride, claiming the Ride app was illegal (I’ve gotten dozens of them in front of police officers, no issues) The ride was priced at 250 Bir on the Ride app ($1.98) It was a fixed price according to them… until it was 800 Bir… then 600 Bir… then they told me to go away. I found a local guy that was willing to do 300 Bir, and went with that. ASK LOCALS WHAT THE FAIR PRICES ARE!
