Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) defended former President Trump in an appearance Tuesday outside the Manhattan courthouse where Mr. Trump is being tried on charges related to falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments made in the waning days of the 2016 election. “President Trump is innocent of these charges,” the speaker declared, calling the trial a “sham” and part of a broader “partisan witch hunt.” The speaker’s appearance came less than a week after Mr. Trump backed him amid a threat to his leadership brought by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). The vast majority of Republicans and Democrats voted to table — or kill — her motion to vacate the chair last Wednesday. Speaker Johnson is the highest-ranking lawmaker to stop by the courthouse. Other Republican politicians to do so include Sens. J.D. Vance (OH), Tommy Tuberville (AL) and Rick Scott (FL) as well as former presidential candidates Vivek Ramaswamy and Doug Burgum. “I called President Trump and told him I wanted to be here myself to call out what is a travesty of justice, and I think everybody around the country can see that,” the speaker said. “I came here, again, today on my own to support President Trump because I am one of hundreds of millions of people, and one citizen, who is deeply concerned about this.” The speaker made the trip to New York as Mr. Trump’s former fixer and the prosecution’s star witness, Michael Cohen, was set to take the stand for the second day. “This is a man who is clearly on a mission for personal revenge and who is widely known as a witness who has trouble with the truth,” he said of Mr. Cohen. “He is someone who has a history of perjury and is well-known for it. No one should believe a word he says today.” Mr. Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to reimbursements made to Mr. Cohen, who paid $130,000 to former porn star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an alleged affair she had with Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges and denies he had an affair with Ms. Daniels. #speakerofthehouse #mikejohnson #donaldtrump #michaelcohen #cspan
