“If I'm going to steal your purse or money, you won't forgive me neither today or after ten days.” In September 1978, President Jimmy Carter, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin finalised the Camp David Accords, laying the groundwork for the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty signed in March 1979. Key provisions included Egypt’s recognition of Israel as a legitimate state, Israel’s withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula, and the establishment of diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. However, Palestinians were excluded from the discussions. Despite these diplomatic advances, Begin maintained that “under no circumstances will there be a Palestinian state.” Instead, a five-year transitional period for the West Bank and Gaza Strip was proposed, during which Palestinians were promised “full autonomy” through a self-governing body. However, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was deliberately excluded, as Israel and the U.S. did not recognise it as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. During this period, Israel expanded settlement activity, severely undermining prospects for Palestinian autonomy. After reclaiming the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt distanced itself from the Palestinian cause, leaving Palestinians without a crucial regional ally. In 1978, Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin received the Nobel Peace Prize for their roles in brokering the accords. However, in 1981, Sadat was assassinated, a killing widely attributed to his perceived betrayal of Arab solidarity after Egypt's peace treaty with Israel. • This clip of an interview with a Palestinian was taken from an episode of TV Eye, first broadcast in December 1978. • • • #archive #history #interview #egypt
