Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday he believed the central bank would likely begin to cut interest rates this year, but that policymakers would like to see more data showing inflation was under control before lowering the benchmark policy rate. “It will depend on the path of the economy,” he testified before the House Financial Services Committee. “The committee would like to see more data that confirm and make us more confident that inflation is moving sustainably down to 2%.” Chair Powell said central bankers have “some confidence” in that, noting that the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, the central bank’s preferred inflation measure, has moved down to 2.4%. “We think because of the strength in the economy and the strength in the labor market and the progress we’ve made, we can approach that step carefully and thoughtfully and with greater confidence,” he said. “When we reach that confidence, the expectation is we will do so sometime this year, we can then begin dialing back the restriction on our policy.” The Fed chair also testified that the economy remains nowhere near a recession, lending credence to the idea that the central bank is on the path to achieving a so-called soft landing, where elevated interest rates bring down inflation without significantly raising unemployment. “What we are seeing so far this year is continued solid growth,” Chair Powell said. “My expectation, and that of other forecasters and of my colleagues, is that we’ll see continued growth at a solid pace.
