FBI Director Christopher Wray warned lawmakers Wednesday that Chinese hackers are preparing to “wreak havoc” on U.S. infrastructure. “China’s hackers are positioning on American infrastructure in preparation to wreak havoc and cause real-world harm to American citizens and communities if and when China decides the time has come to strike,” Mr. Wray told the House Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. “We cannot afford to sleep on this danger.” While the Biden administration has recently sought to ease tensions with Beijing, the FBI director has been consistently sounding the alarm that the Chinese government intends harm to Americans by targeting water treatment plants, the electrical grid, oil and natural gas pipelines, and transportation systems. “China’s multipronged assault on our national and economic security make it the defining threat of our generation,” Mr. Wray testified. “There has been far too little public focus on the fact that PRC hackers are targeting our critical infrastructure … and the risk that poses to every American requires our attention — now.” During Mr. Wray’s testimony, the Justice Department announced it had disrupted a Chinese hacking operation, known as “Volt Typhoon,” that had infected hundreds of small office and home routers with botnet malware that was designed to target critical infrastructure. “The Volt Typhoon malware enabled China to hide among other things, pre-operational reconnaissance and network exploitation against critical infrastructure like our communications, energy, transportation and water sectors — steps China was taking, in other words, to find and prepare to destroy or degrade the civilian critical infrastructure that keeps us safe and prosperous,” Mr. Wray said. #fbi #christopherwray #china #prc #hackers #cspan
