After their recent checkups at the Avian Vet, it turns out that Apollo and Soleil still have issues with their preen glands (which we refer to as "butts") that were first noticed at their 2023 checkups. Apollo's is enlarged/too full and too much force is needed to expel the oil, though the wick feathers are in good shape and the oil appears normal. Soleil's been pulling her wick feathers out (they'll do this to try and unplug the gland) and had her gland fully plugged. It took the vet a lot of force to expel and the oil was very creamy when it’s supposed to be almost clear. After the 2023 checkup, we started doing manual expulsion of Apollo’s and Soleil’s glands a few times a week, alongside a more frequent showering schedule, as recommended by our avian veterinarian. After getting both flowing well, and continuing on with giving regular soaking showers, we assumed it was sorted. It seems our mistake was thinking that getting them flowing properly again was the stopping point, but now we know and will have keep doing this until they are fully drained down to a good base point and are much more squishy. Apollo's gland originally got plugged because after he regained his flight, we lost the ability to take showers on the porch, the only way he would willingly take a soaking shower. Afterwards, it was about a year of giving him subpar mist showers in the bathroom. He didn't like the setting, and would keep his feathers tight to the body, making him nearly waterproof. Then, we got the carrier cages, and discovered that he tolerates showers with the hose sprayer outside. We can blast the important parts with enough pressure to bypass his water proofing without hurting or making him very upset. Soleil and Ophelia are able to bathe themselves in their cage bowl alongside the regular showers we now give them. This doesn't work for Apollo, because he can only get his feet wet. We're not quite sure why Soleil's gland originally got plugged, but our guess is that it happened in her time between the pet shop, first owners, and back to the pet shop; likely with minimal if any showers or baths. #parrotsoftiktok #africangrey #animals #animalcare
