Most people driving across the Red River bridge into Bossier City have no idea they're crossing the exact spot where a woman changed railroad history. Back in the 1830s, this land was Elysian Groves Plantation, owned by James and Mary Cane, and steamboats loaded with cotton, corn, and sweet potatoes shipped out from a dock known simply as Cane's Landing. For decades the only way across the Red River was a ferry called the Sterling White, until the Vicksburg, Shreveport and Pacific Railroad decided to bridge the gap in the 1880s. In 1883, the Canes' granddaughter Anna Stockwell and her husband J.J. saw the future coming and started selling lots for a brand-new riverfront city, naming it Bossier City after General Pierre Bossier, the Creole militia leader the whole parish was already named for. On July 12, 1884, the town hosted a golden spike ceremony to mark the finished railroad line, and the honor of driving that spike went to a young woman named Julia
On July 12, 1884, the town hosted a golden spike ceremony to mark the finished railroad line, and the honor of driving that spike went to a young woman named Julia "Pansy" Rule, making her the first woman in history to drive a golden spike. The name itself went through a wild identity crisis, cycling through Cane's Landing, Alexander's Precinct, and Caneville before finally sticking as Bossier City, and even then, postal workers once refused to deliver mail addressed to "the Town of Bossier City" because they insisted a town could not legally be called a city. It took an act of Congress, pushed by Louisiana representative Overton Brooks, to force the postal service to accept the name. From a scrappy river landing with a stubborn identity problem, Bossier City grew into the entertainment and casino hub of northwest Louisiana that stands on the riverbank today. If you drive through downtown Bossier City tonight, you're standing on ground that was fought over by a ferry, a bridge, and a postal service that just would not cooperate. Follow along for more forgotten Louisiana history you were never taught in school. #BossierCity #LouisianaHistory #RedRiver #HiddenHistory #LouisianaTravel
