We may be the last generation that leans back to help our parents, to lift them into a better financial standing, or simply to ease the weight they have carried for so long. It makes me pause. Really pause. And if I am honest, it leaves me with mixed feelings. I know the quiet contentment that came when I could finally place a portion of my earnings into the hands of the woman who bore me. There is a joy that cannot be explained in watching your own people wade, even if only a little, from poverty. There is an honour in becoming, for a season, the answered prayer of those who first answered yours. I am deeply conscious of the blessing that comes with such a privilege. Yet I am equally aware of the many lives whose progress was delayed because of this leaning. Men and women who spent years building behind them before they could build ahead of them. Dreams postponed. Homes delayed. Opportunities quietly surrendered—not because they lacked ambition, but because love demanded that they first look back. And then another thought quietly finds its way into my heart. I hope my own children will never have to lean back in the same way. Not because I would not want them to care for me, but because I would want their generosity to be born of love, not necessity. I would want whatever they place in my hands to be a gift, not a burden they feel obliged to carry. These two arguments sit quietly within me. The profound honour of lifting those who lifted us. And the equally profound desire to ensure that those who come after us can walk forward without carrying the same weight. Neither voice is wrong. Perhaps that is why this thought leaves me so tender.
