Dark matter vs dark energy, what’s the difference? It’s easy to confuse dark energy with dark matter, but they are different. Both are much more abundant than what we usually call “normal matter”, like the atoms and everything we can see and touch. There’s much more dark energy than dark matter though, making up around 70% of the universe, while dark matter only accounts for 25%. Without dark matter galaxies wouldn’t stay together and spin the way they do. Dark energy seems to be a property of space itself, sort of opposing gravity and separating everything from everything else. Before the 1990s, scientists knew the universe was expanding but they thought that contrary to expanding in an accelerating way, the expansion would rather stop or even start shrinking because of gravity. They were wrong. The discovery of this accelerating expansion in the late 1990s was a huge paradigm shift because it meant we had a missing piece in our understating of the inner workings of our universe. Something else must be causing this accelerated expansion, maybe a new type of energy, maybe our current theories are insufficient to explain how the universe works on a larger scale. We don’t know what it is yet, so we call it dark energy. The discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe awarded scientists Adam Riess, Saul Perlmutter and Brian Schmidt the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics.
