This is perhaps the most common question I’m asking about composting, and given the amount of work involved I totally understand where it comes from. Turning compost is a lot of work particularly if you have a large pile, and even turning a full compost tumbler can be a bit of a workout. Is it worth it? Absolutely. Turning your compost fosters the growth of aerobic microbes, which will ultimately be what you want in your soil when the compost is “finished”. Similarly, turning your compost allows portion of your pile to get its moment in the hotspot (provided you are hot composting) which will speed up the process, and if you’re at the right temperatures, also kill off weed seeds and plant pathogens. That being said there are many great methods of composting if you are unable to turn huge amounts of compost, or lack the time to do so (or it isn’t as much of a priority). At the end of the day a pile of greens and browns will ultimately rot down, and turn into usable compost! #composting101 #compostforbeginners #compostingforbeginners #composteducation #compost #compostera #regenerativegardening #permaculture #gardeneducation #gardening101
