I think it more of 'no one cares about me as a man so if I die, so whatever.' mixed with a bit of 'nah, I'd win' with a flair of 'he can try but he'll get hurt or killed with me and I fight dirty.'

It’s about power balance. Most men are pretty close to each other in physical strength, close enough to where a street fight can cause real damage to the other. So why bother?

One of my biggest wake-up calls was ten years ago when I lived in Beijing and was walking home with several friends at night. I was taking my usual shortcuts down alleyways, and they were like, “We’re not going that way.” I was like, “WHY?? It’S sO mUcH sHoRtEr!!” And they said something that changed my outlook forever: “Because we’re women.” It simply never occurred to me how much of their lives, even on the smallest levels, are different just because of the size and shape of their bodies. I grew up gay in Alabama, but because I was 5’11” and 200lbs when I came out at age 13, I’ve never once had to worry about my bodily safety. Never. Even as femme as I am.
