@mollyburkeofficial: I’ve said it before and I'll say it again, I’m proud to be disabled. To be clear, I’m not proud of the hardships, the discrimination, or the lack of accessibility, but none of those issues exist because my disability. They exist because of society, because of learned behaviors, because of ableism. What I’m proud of is the strength those hardships have given me, the community of support the discrimination has led me to find, and the voice I’ve developed to advocate for myself and others. And mostly today, I’m proud that I’m proud of my blindness because I never thought I would be. Living in a world that demonizes disability makes it hard to not only accept it, but to turn it into something positive that’s worth loving about yourself and I can wholeheartedly say that’s where I am today. Thank you to the disability activists that paved the way for me, the ones who stand beside me, and the ones still trying to find themselves. We’ve got a long way to go before this world is truly equitable for all of us but together we are stronger and we’re going to get there.
