This photo was taken in 1958 in Kampala when Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Raila (squatting) were raising funds for the Luo community. Luo Union EA, which had branches in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, was later proscribed by the Government of the Republic of Kenya in 1981 together with all other tribal associations like GEMA. For ten years from 1981 to 1991, Luos did not have any umbrella association (Wii Pinje) bringing together all the Luo clans. They then cobbled the Luo Council of Elders and restored the kership under Joash Kasati aka Koyo Opien. The position of RUODH GORO (Luo Secretary - General) was then created under Prof Gilbert Ogutu. Ruodh Goro had specific roles assigned to him to undertake in the Luo Community. The Luo Union EA and the Luo Thrift & Trading Corporation (LUTATCO) were both founded by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga....ideas which germinated in the mind of The Doyen between 1942 and 1947 upon his return from Makerere University College. He (Jaramogi) had to quit teaching to galvanize the community to pursue economic development. Ajuma helped the community construct Ramogi House, Ofafa Memorial Hall etc. He also established several business ventures including farms, Ramogi Press and Lolwe Bus Service...most of which were fought politically when he fell out with Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. The New Nyanza Provincial General Hospital aka Russia (currently known as Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital) and Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT) were some of the facilities brought by The Doyen for the benefit of the community.
