Paul Reubens has had more of an impact on my life than any other person. Growing up watching Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, his HBO comedy special, and Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, it instilled in me the values of being weird and artsy and silly (note…the time he married fruit salad) and most of all, being true to yourself. Pee-Wee was funny, funky, and friendly…but had his limits! One minute he was inviting you over to sit on Chairy and watch a Penny Cartoon, and the next…he was forcing you to make 1000 holiday cards by sundown!! And don’t even THINK about stealing his bike. HA! This was a bratty reality I always appreciated. These lessons, while subconsciously engrained into the older kid I was becoming, they laid dormant until my dad passed away when I was 17. Pee-Wee was a big part of my dad’s identity…and then I guess it became mine. Eventually in 2004 while searching on AOL for a pen pal, as one does, I searched for some key words that were important to me…Pee-Wee Herman (and Prince and Radiohead) and I found one profile that mentioned that specific combo (in addition to my own)…I sent her an email, and almost 20 years later now she’s my wife. It was the single most surreal, thrilling moment of my life to get Pee-Wee’s (enthusiastic) help to make my proposal a reality. Back when my wife and I were two 6 year-olds watching Pee-wee 500 miles apart, but together, little did we know that one day we would get to smooch in the Playhouse, next to other best friend, Pee-Wee. Thank you for all you’ve given me and so many others. I’m a firm believer that the best people are Pee-Wee people. Some of my favorite people have come into my life as a direct result of a love of Pee-Wee. Sending hugs to all my other Pee-Wee pals out there…I hope we can all have a ##massive gathering someday at the giant dinosaurs. Lastly to my own lil Pee-wee pal…I hope you can someday come to appreciate B that middle name, Herman. #peeweeherman #paulreubens #peeweehermanbigaventure #peeweesplayhose
