Many claim the work of Jesus ended at the cross—but the Bible shows otherwise. When Jesus cried out in John 19:30, “It is finished” (Greek: tetelestai, Latin: consummatum est), He wasn’t saying His mission was over—He was declaring that His sacrificial offering was complete. Just as in the Old Testament the sacrifice was not complete until it was fully consumed by fire, so at Calvary the Lamb of God had fully borne our sins, fulfilled prophecy, and paid the price for redemption. But after the cross, Jesus rose again (1 Corinthians 15:17), ascended to heaven, and began His high priestly ministry (Hebrews 8:1-2). His sacrifice on earth was the doorway into His work in the heavenly sanctuary—interceding for us, applying His blood, and preparing a people for His return (Hebrews 7:25; Revelation 14:12). The cross was not the finish line of all His work—it was the perfect completion of His atoning sacrifice that made possible the next phase of salvation’s plan. If we stop at the cross, we miss the living Christ who now ministers for us in heaven and will soon return for His people.
