Have you heard these garden myths before? Here’s why they are, in fact, myths: -Fresh pine needles are acidic, but dry pine needles are much more neutral. Because they break down so slowly, they have little effect on soil pH. They make a GREAT, long lasting mulch. -The “rocks in containers” myth has been around a long time. In fact, due to a phenomenon called a perched water table, adding a layer of rocks will make drainage WORSE. Water will not move from a fine to a coarse material easily and plant roots will be sitting in saturated mix. All you need is good potting mix and a container with adequate drainage holes. -Contrary to popular belief, hilling potatoes does not increase yields in and of itself. Hilling mostly protects tubers from the sun. Hilling can help keep potato roots cooler, resulting in a healthier plant. However, repeated hilling up the stems doesn’t make the plant produce more potatoes. -Adding sand to clay soil seems like it would help right? Only if you are adding enough to make it 75% sand by volume. That’s A LOT of sand! Smaller amounts will result in the clay particles filling up micropores in the sand…turning the soil like cement! Add compost to improve drainage in clay soil. -It is true that you should bury tomatoes deep, but it’s not those tiny hairs that turn into roots. Those hairs, called trichomes, are an important part of the plant’s defenses. It’s actually specialized cells along the stem that grow into roots. #gardenmyths #mythbusted #gardentips #didyouknow #gardening #garden101 #plants #raisedbedgarden #containergardening
