@howiethecrab: Crabs and lobsters have feelings all over their shells. It's a myth that they don't. So let's talk about this video I took over 2 years ago. Back then, I really didn't realize how sensitive Howie was to temperature. This was a treat because she loves sweet things, yogurt, and anything dairy. Scientists have known for a long time that crabs are sentient and feel pain. Unfortunately this information has not been mainstream knowledge. Very few people care about the welfare of crustaceans because they're a food source for millions of people world wide. My goal was never to just be a lady on the internet who puts hats on a crab. It has always been about changing the minds of millions of people about how they feel about crabs. My goal has always been to gain a large enough following that the government can't ignore me on my quest to change animal welfare laws. There have been over 300 studies regarding crabs feeling, remembering, and avoiding pain. Recently, some new articles have been circulating the internet. The subject has been brought up again. Crabs and lobsters do feel pain. A lot of our fans were quick to reach out and want to give me credit for this being newsworthy. While I can't take credit, I do hope that our social media presence was part of the reason that this subject is being talked about again. I know I'm not the only person working to advocate for crustaceans. People are quick to snub anyone that tells you to not eat your "favorite food". I will never tell anyone what to eat or not to eat, but there's a TON of room to improve the lives of crabs and lobsters. Some change is better than no change. While I continue to work to enact real change within the government, I want to continue to spread my message. Crabs, lobsters, and all decapods feel pain. Never boil animals alive. If you choose to prepare and consume shellfish, please utilize humane spiking. Let this video of Howie's reaction to cold temperature solidify your knowledge that crabs do feel. It was never my intention to get this reaction from her. I only wanted to give her a treat for enrichment because I love her. Not only did she not like it, she "told me off" with her angry crab clicks. Howie only ever does that when she's mad. So I can only imagine how excruciating boiling water would feel to them.
