My mom was really sick. Her husband took her to the hospital, and she was told she had cancer but we, her kids, didn’t know yet. I remember waking up to her best friend telling me the news and that I had to go to my uncle’s house. I threw a fit because I hated going anywhere without my mom. Days went by, and she kept telling us she was getting better. We believed her. She was always at the hospital for chemo, but she tried to make life feel normal. On October 31st, I went trick-or-treating with her. I didn’t know that would be the last holiday I’d ever spend with her. On November 1st, I left her house to go to my dad’s so I wouldn’t miss school. The next day, November 2nd, I texted her after school: “Hey mom, how you doing?” A few hours later, her husband called. He said she had passed away in his arms three times, but they kept bringing her back. She was in the NICU, covered in blankets because she was so cold. Two days later, me and my brother got pulled out of school to go to the hospital. My pap was talking about how he had to go through this with my grandma, and now with my mom. My mom could hear us, but she couldn’t speak back. I was told to touch her hand, but I was too scared, too traumatized. Then the doctors came out and asked, “What do we want to do?” I broke down crying, saying I wanted my mom but I had no say. My family decided to take her off life support. My pap went back in to check on her, and then came out to say she had passed. I looked at the clock, it said 10:10. That’s the time I’ll always remember, even though I know she was gone before that. My mom was so much more than her illness. She was a 4-H leader. She loved baking. She loved holidays, fairs, rabbits, sewing on plastic canvas, yard sales, even her little ankle-biter dog. She loved life in all the small ways that made her, her. And that’s how I’ll always remember her.🤍🕊️
