Sometimes you wake up feeling MUCH WORSE than when you went to bed 😭 You probably didn't do anything unusual through the night 👀 It's probably not your pillow's fault either 🫡 When this happens, it's often a sign of symptoms from a disc in the spine - most commonly from the lower back or neck. When we are laying down throughout the night, there is less compression through the spine which allows the discs to take on some water and rehydrate. They swell up, to a certain extent. Then when we get upright again in the morning, we put compression back on the discs and slowly, throughout the day, that extra water diffuses back out again. This is a normal cycle that happens everyday. But, if one of those discs is already a bit injured and inflamed, the swelling that happens overnight is a bit like an amplifier. So when we get upright again in the morning, it's like the problem gets put on blast. At the lowest level of symptom, you might just feel tension and tightness that washes out over a couple of hours. At the other end of the spectrum, you can find yourself in severe pain with difficulty moving and it takes several minutes or even a couple of hours to allow you to move properly.
