We did the drive your own carriage and had a horse named King. He was very stubborn and the residents seemed to know him. They kept shouting commands to help us out. Lol

Not just the breathing heavy I know draft horses well…If they are your main transportation there hoofs should be better cared for a farrier should be there on the island so many of there hoofs bad

Degree in Equine Science here. My name is a combination of 2 of my horses. Of all the videos I've seen of island horses, I've only ever seen 1 that I thought was questionable. Great care.

I live near the park/stables where the Budweiser Clysdales are kept and they run around in full snow in the paddock with icicles hanging off their faces lol. They're true work horses

I never saw abuse, they’re well cared for. They do get a little ornery and have to be reprimanded sometimes especially with the 2 horse power. The drivers know how to handle these guys.

My husband is in a power wheelchair and was born and raised in Michigan. We always talk about going to visit Mackinac Island every year but haven't done it yet. Would you say it's pretty accessible?

I had a friend who worked on the island only a couple years ago and quit because of the treatment of the animals. The animals aren’t out on pasture

I’m a big horse person and Mackinaw is the one place I’ve seen where the horses actually seem to be so well taken care of. Great job to the workers!

I drove a green “rent your own carriage” horse last summer and that horse was SO loved! I remember her so fondly. They were so happy a horse person came to take her out for her first “rent a carriage”

Fun story when I was 6, my dad left me and my sister in a horse buggy to grab us ice cream on the island and he didn’t tie us up well enough and we had a joy ride with them down the main road! 😂

The horses are the most beautiful that I have ever seen. The tour guide said that they had to work in the stables and establish a relationship with them before being in the position to guide them.
