Explaining The US-Europe-Ukraine Divorce #usa #europe Zelensky says the end to the war is very far away. This made Trump very upset because he said that this is the worst possible thing Zelensky could have said and that America won’t put up with it for much longer. So what’s the deal here? Experts seem to agree that this peace fiasco has three axis so I’ll just summarize it all for you and it should give you some insight cause this is a total mess: On Axis 1 is Ukraine, they’ve been fighting this war of survival now for three years, and Zelensky is being very real about the situation and how there isn’t going to be a real end date to this because — ultimately Putin can’t be trusted, he’s broken 25 ceasefires, and throughout this 11 year invasion he has used ceasefires to rearm and then go back to invading. So if there is going to be peace - there has to be NATO membership so that Putin won’t attack again. They can’t just go off of Trump’s insistence that Putin won’t attack again. On Axis 2 is Europe. Russia is a genuine threat to them. They have picked intelligence signals time and time again that Russia plans to take the Baltics in the next 3 to 5 years. Ukraine is like the dam, and if the dam breaks… that means war. They don’t necessarily oppose a peace deal but they share the same view as Ukraine - any stop gap measure to temporarily secure peace is worse than the war continuing given that it’ll help Russia recover. At first their view was to let Trump attempt to negotiate a peace and then he’ll come to the realization that Russia isn’t interested in peace, and go back to arming Ukraine. What they weren’t expecting is that Trump reportedly just offered Russia whatever it wanted, including parts of Ukraine & the removal of US troops from NATO, in order to secure a peace. So now they are moving to undercut Trump’s ability to do that, with Starmer and Macron saying they’ll create the peace deal and then present it to Trump. Europe is playing for time now. They can’t decouple from the US overnight, so you have Macron and Starmer trying to keep the transatlantic alliance alive even if it’s only on paper — but the medium to long term view is that Europe and America are split for good.. at least as long as Trump and Vance are around. On Axis 3 is America - Trump ran on ending the war & his sympathies to Russia are well known. And in his first term, he was impeached for blackmailing Ukraine. So you have Trump getting very mad that Ukraine won’t accept a peace deal, he says that Zelensky doesn’t want peace — but you have many saying… peace at any price is what we did in 1938, and how did that turn out? You’re seeing some say that Trump wants to reset relations with Putin which is why he’s pushing so hard for this peace deal by offering the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Europe and attacking Zelensky. The White House says that Trump won’t negotiate with Zelensky or sign any kind of mineral deal unless Zelensky apologizes on camera. And the White House keeps implying that the mineral deal is a security guarantee because they think Russia won’t attack if there are American companies in Ukraine. But you’re seeing loads of push back on that with the UK saying it’s not enough of a security guarantee — and you’re seeing others saying that mineral extraction takes years if not decades to set up. Some are calling the past weekend the Western version of the “Sino-Soviet split”.
