The Mavrospelio Ring 🏺 | This 3,700-year-old Minoan gold ring carries one of the strangest Linear A inscriptions ever discovered. Twenty-two signs spiral inward across its face, unlike the straight administrative texts Linear A usually appears in. The only real visual parallel is the Phaistos Disc, which also uses a spiral layout, although it is written in a different script. The ring was found in a chamber tomb near Knossos, which may be the most interesting part. Gold rings were prestige objects in the Minoan world, associated with status, administration, and religion. Whoever was buried with this one belonged to a very small part of society wealthy or powerful enough to own gold and use writing. But what does the inscription say? Linear A is still undeciphered. The text could contain a name, a dedication, a prayer, or something meant to accompany the dead. There have been attempts to connect it to figures like Pasiphae, but those readings go far beyond what the evidence can actually support. Sources: Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
