In March of 1917, after a series of disastrous decisions by the Russian autocratic government and massive discontent from the people, Tsar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate. The newly established provisional government urged foreign countries to give the Romanovs asylum out of fear that pro-monarchist groups would try to restore the monarchy. Britain initially agreed; however, King George V, who was first cousin to both Nicholas and his wife, Alexandra, urged the government to rescind the offer. The Palace knew that the British people were aware of Nicholas’s chaotic regime—he was even nicknamed “Bloody Nicholas.” They feared that having the Romanovs on British soil might cause unrest among the working classes sympathetic to the new revolutionary regime in Russia, not to mention that anti-German sentiments caused by the ongoing World War led to the despise of German-born Alexandra. In November of 1917, the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, seized power, ultimately sealing the fate of the Romanovs. On July 17, 1918, while still imprisoned at Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, the family was awoken. They were all shot to death, then clubbed with the butts of guns and bayonets. All seven of the Romanovs—the last gasp of the Russian monarchy—were dead. #foryou #history #theroyalfamily
