The problem is they expect you to speak Spanish and they don't speak English... In some jobs I don't know why that's not a requirement😒

Miami native… It’s not uncommon for people to start with Spanish first. I do wish I was fluent. I have mastered “lo siento. No entiendo español. Yo necesita apprendar.” 😂

I’m Haitian-American and born in raised in Miami. They 100% judge you a bit if you don’t speak Spanish. I kind of survive speaking Spanglish. I’m not fluent but I can understand for the most bit

Born and raised I’m Haitian and I speak Creole fluently. I only speak basic Spanish because of work, personally I don’t think it’s a requierment it definitely depends on which part of Miami you’re in.

You’re describing me. No, it’s not embarrassing. But, much like visiting a foreign country, it is polite to learn a few words and phrases to help communicate. And we never try to make them feel bad about not speaking English.

Not born here, but lived in Dade since 1969. Only if you are very Nordic (blond, blue-eyed) will people assume you may not be Hispanic. My husband is Anglo and people assume he’s Hispanic.

Not embarrassing, but people are sometimes surprised I don’t speak Spanish as a native. But I grew up in North Dade.

I feel like most locals know basic Spanish but you look like you could be Latin so they really do assume you do. I had an Italian coworker and ppl would get upset that he didnt speak lol but he didn't

Most of the people here are bilingual, so it’s not a problem if you don’t speak Spanish👍but you will be enjoying more if you learn some words! 🥰

Born and raised in South Florida, I started learning Spanish when I was 3. I can’t imagine not knowing, it’s been pretty necessary.

It’s kinda embarrassing ONLY bc if you went to schools in Miami then you had majorly Spanish teachers. & LOTS of detailed Spanish classes. Nothing like Spanish you would take let’s say in NY. Cause tbr ny Spanish is what we in Miami call “español machucado” I remember being in elementary with my Cuban Spanish teacher & she made SURE we pronounced everything correctly & wrote everything correctly. They really do make an effort for kids to learn Spanish

Growing up here the only kids that didn’t speak Spanish were some of the private school kids, I went to an IB K-8 that was half the day in Spanish & half English & even non hispanic kids were fluent

No. Not embarrassing at all. My Polish friend does not speak Spanish. And I get very upset when people in Miami just assume that she should.
